Synopsis
Charlie Grant's older sister is getting married this weekend at their family home, and Charlie can't wait for the first time in years, all four of her older siblings will be under one roof. Charlie is desperate for one last perfect weekend, before the house is sold and everything changes. The house will be filled with jokes and games and laughs again. Making decisions about things like what college to attend and reuniting with longstanding crush Jesse Foster all that can wait. She wants to focus on making the weekend perfect.
The only problem? The weekend is shaping up to be an absolute disaster. There's the unexpected dog with a penchant for howling, house alarm that won't stop going off, and a papergirl with a grudge.
There are the relatives who aren't speaking, the (awful) girl her favorite brother brought home unannounced, and a missing tuxedo. Not to mention the neighbor who seems to be bent on sabotage and a storm that is bent on drenching everything. The justice of the peace is missing. The band will only play covers. The guests are all crazy. And the wedding planner's nephew is unexpectedly, distractedly cute.
Over the course of three ridiculously chaotic days, Charlie will learn more than she ever expected about the family she thought she knew by heart. And she'll realize that sometimes, trying to keep everything like it was in the past means missing out on the future.
Review
Maybe I am the only one with a very soft spot for Morgan Matson books, but can you blame me?
I absolutely loved this book. I loved the chaos that it all was and the extensive family dynamics. Every relationship between each character int he family is so well intertwined and there is clear growth from each and every one of them by the end of it.
I also loved the 'comic' strips that we get from the Grant family, and how this fiction reflects on their reality. You can't help but fall in love with this family, even if sometimes you dislike their actions and wish they would just communicate with each other, I love every single one of them dearly.
Furthermore, I loved the topic/discussion/light they shed on a very important theme throughout this whole book. In case you missed it, its about how we can like/fall in love/crush/admire the mere idea that we have about someone without it being who they actually are. I think this is portrayed very well throughout the book.
The plot has some tension building up until the moment of the wedding and you can clearly see that with all the interactions and external conflicts going on. My favorite moment must be when the siblings go on a very fun adventure together. I can't help but smile whenever Morgan Matson books have these adventures and fun moments in them.
Needless to say, it was refreshing reading a book that was focused a lot on family as opposed to heavily-romance focused novels.
I gave this book ★★★★ stars on Goodreads.
